A fabulous, hand-watercolored, post-WWII city plan of New Orleans.

Details

This lovely city plan of New Orleans captures the city in the midst of its post-World War II boom, a time in which it expanded rapidly both within the city center, and surrounding suburbs. This is New Orleans under the stewardship of Mayor DeLesseps “Chep” Morrison, who shaped the city’s post-World War II trajectory, and became a prominent national figure.

In a somewhat different postwar developmental pattern than that experienced by other older American cities, New Orleans’ center city population grew for the first two decades after the war. This was due to the city’s ability to accommodate large amounts of new, suburban-style development within the existing city limits, in such neighborhoods as Lakeview, Gentilly, Algiers and New Orleans East.

All of these developments, along with parks, canals, and the Mississippi River, are brought to life by the excellent hand color on the map.
