1782 Gauthey wall map of Burgundy (Bourgogne) wine region in France.

Details

A stunning 1782 and quite rare wall map of the Duchy of Bourgogne detailing the important wine region of Burgundy. The map covers from the Champagne region just north of Dijon south as far as Macon and from Nivernais to Rochefort. The map focuses on the Saone Valley and the rich wine lands to the east. It provides excellent detail of the various chateaux in Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais. Coverage of the Beaujolais region is limited.

The map is adorned with two incredible cartouches, each with a foreground depicting symbols of the harvest and allusions to Dionysis and backgrouds of country landscapes.

This map was compiled for administrative purposes on the order of the provincial government. It was drawn by François Pourcher under the direction of Émiland Marie Gauthey (1732-1806). Engraved by L. Monnier.

Only a single example of this map appears on the OCLC, that being located in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. It is possible that other examples may be located in French provincial libraries.
