Signed Ernest Dudley Chase 1945 pictorial map of North America

Details

Splendid, signed example of Ernest Dudley Chase’s art deco pictorial map of North America, stretching from Greenland to Panama.

The map is filled with small pictographs illustrating wildlife and important monuments, both natural and manmade. Some thirty pictograph medallions depict highlights of the North American continent, including: The Alamo, Yosemite Falls, the Great Mormon Tabernacle, Mexico City’s Palace of Fine Arts, the National Capitol in Havana, the Rose Bowl, the French Quarter of New Orleans, Niagara Falls, Independence Hall in Philadelphia, Chicago’s Civic Opera Building, the U.S. Capitol Building, and Rockefeller Center in New York City.

The map features tremendous detail throughout, even in Greenland, which is still part of Denmark.

Ernest Dudley Chase was born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1878. After attending the Lowell Textile School and the Vesper George Art School in Boston, Chase joined the Butterfield Printing Company in 1900. In 1906, he joined the printing firm of W.T. Sheehan in Boston and began his own greeting card company in 1908, Des Arts Publishers, which eventually became Ernest Dudley Chase Publishers. In 1921, Chase Publishers was purchased by Rust Craft. Chase worked at Rust Craft until 1958 in the position of vice president of creative design. He died in 1966.
