Large 1882 Special Edition of Kitchener & Conder’s famous Map of Western Palestine.

Details

This is an exceptional example of a special edition of Kitchener & Conder’s map of Western Palestine, published in 1882, the year following the issuance of the first edition of the map. It stretches along the eastern Mediterranean coast from Tyre in the north to Gaza in the south, inland to the Dead Sea up the Jordan River to the Sea of Galilee and Mount Hermon.

The original map consists of 26 sheets and is ordinarily found bound in atlas format; this version is laid on linen and folds nicely into its original case.

The present example of the map is heavily revised to illustrate drainage of the mountain ranges in the eastern part of the map, based on the work of Trelawney Saunders in An Introduction to the Survey of Western Palestine.

Cartographer(s):

Claude R. Conder & Horatio Kitchener

Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, was an Irish-born British Field Marshal and proconsul who gained fame for his imperial campaigns and later played a central role in the early part of the First World War, although he died halfway through it. In 1874, at age 24, the Palestine Exploration Fund tasked Kitchener to carry out a topographical survey of the Holy Land, replacing Charles Tyrwhitt-Drake, who had died of malaria.

Together with fellow Royal Engineer Claude R. Conder, Kitchener surveyed the region between 1874 and 1877, collecting data on the topography and toponymy of the area, as well as on local flora and fauna.

Condition Description
