Lovely 1956 promotional map for the Menier Chocolate Company.

Details

This beautiful and novel pictorial map was published by Agence Francaise de Propagande as a promotional item for Menier Chocolat. The credited artist is Jan-Loup, an artist and illustrator best known for his comics for Lisette magazine in the 50s and 60s.

The map spans Europe and Asia and is filled with striking illustrations: Neptune riding a sea monster in the Atlantic; a bullfighter in Spain; Red Square in Russia; oil fields between the Black and Caspian seas; a cobra facing off against a panda in Pakistan; the Buddha in Tibet; the Great Wall of China. A red-lined route connects the major cities in Europe and Asia.

In the late 19th century, Menier was the leading chocolate maker in the world and a pioneer of modern advertising, but by the time this map was published, the company was near its end.
