A bi-coastal artistic dialogue — San Francisco’s response to Steinberg’s View of the World from 9th Avenue.

Details

Drawing on the zeitgeist of the time and the success of Saul Steinberg’s 1976 View of the World from 9th Avenue New Yorker cover, here we have a subjective view for San Francisco looking across the Bay and towards a nondescript east.

Taylor and Mason Streets have taken the place of New York’s 9th and 10th Avenues. The perspective is centered on Geary Blvd, here call “The Great Geary Way.” San Francisco Bay is drawn as a strip to mirror Steinberg’s Hudson River.

It is clear that McCaffry had both talent and wit. As Las Vegas warranted a spot on Steinberg’s map, but San Francisco did not, McCaffry has returned the favor by including Atlantic City but not New York City in his view.
