Fabulous pictorial bird’s-eye-view of Tiburon, Mill Valley, and Sausalito.

Details

This delightful pictorial view of Southern Marin highlights local businesses, along with the quirks and attractions that give the area its unique character. Businesses are promoted with illustrations of corresponding signs and logos, and even caricatures of the business owners themselves.

The view covers Tiburon, Strawberry, Mill Valley, Tam Valley, and Sausalito, with Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and San Francisco in the background. Both the quality and wit of the artists is evident. It is filled with inside references and humorous asides. An Imperial Walker and a pair of Ewoks patrol West Marin, a reference to Skywalker Ranch. The tentacle of a sea monster reaches for a car on Highway 101. Al Capone smokes a cigar on Alcatraz.

The mapmakers have also inserted interesting historical tidbits throughout the view. We learn that Ark Row in Belvedere dates to the 1890s, when this part of the cove was still on water, and that Sausalito was first discovered by Spanish explorers in 1775.

A rare and wonderful encapsulation of southern Marin County in the 1980s.
