Mapping the life and work of Junipero Serra, including the Spanish mission system in California.

Details

This seemingly unrecorded and rare map, signed by the author, celebrates the two hundred and tenth anniversary of the 1769 foundation of Misión San Fernando Rey de España de Velicatá, Junipero Serra’s first mission in the New World, and the only Franciscan mission in Baja California. The richly decorated pictorial map focuses on the life and work of Serra (1713 – 1784), a Roman Catholic Spanish priest and friar of the Franciscan Order, who was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015.

Geographically, the map focuses on two areas: the island of Mallorca, where Serra was born at Petra and entered the Franciscan Order at Palma, and California, where he founded the first nine of twenty-one Spanish missions in California from San Diego to San Francisco. It includes a portrait of Serra himself, along with a short biography, and a portrait of Pope John the Paul II and a prayer.

Along the top and right side of the map are vignette views of important missions founded by Serra, including missions at San Diego, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara.

The author’s artistic skill is evident in the rich array of illustrations on the map, especially in the extremely elaborate heraldic cartouche, but the border frame, various medallions, animals, and more.
