Details

This midcentury pictorial map of San Francisco has a style unlike any other from this era. It uses stylized images fashioned as flags to highlight neighborhoods, cultural institutions, and landmarks within the city. The verso illustrates the history of San Francisco and celebrates its uniqueness. It also contains a small bird’s-eye-view of the Bay Area.

The map was created to promote Crocker First National Bank, a forerunner to Wells Fargo Bank. It was published about one hundred years after the Gold Rush; by drawing attention to the progress and growth of the city during the previous century, the bank ties itself to this idea of success and stability.
