William Berry

William Berry was a bookseller, geographer, and engraver, active between about 1670 and 1703. Among his notable accomplishments as a cartographer was the correction and amendment of Nicolas Sanson’s charts, frequently referred to as the ‘English Sanson Collection’. Yet Berry did not publish complete atlases but rather issued most of his maps in untitled collections. As such, few examples have survived, making his maps exceedingly rare. His revised Sanson maps competed directly with the great Dutch and French mapmakers with respect to accuracy and beauty. Consequently, Berry’s maps were, and continue to be, highly sought after by English-speaking collectors.
