Cartographer Biographies

Maps are like stratigraphic profiles of superimposed knowledge and imagination; sometimes packed so tightly that individual strata can be difficult to discern. Yet behind the stratigraphy of geographical knowledge and political ambition, each map is also the brain-child of an individual, a single human being’s take on that particular part of the world. This is just one of the things that makes the cartographers behind great maps just as important as the maps themselves.

Neatline has accumulated a significant index database of cartographers, artists, printers, and mapmakers from all around the world, and spanning a period of almost six centuries. This treasure trove of information on the individual cartographers is now being made freely available to the public via our LEARN platform.
