Description

Large sea chart of the North Atlantic, extending from Greenland to Nova Zembla, with northern Scandinavia, Iceland, part of Russia, and surrounding islands, including Spitsbergen, and Jan Mayen.

Iceland includes a smoking Hekla. The map is embellished with gorgeous typography, two compass roses, rhumb lines, and lovely hand watercolor.

The Van Keulen family were leading Dutch chart makers of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The business was founded in 1681 by Johannes van Keulen, acquiring the stock of Hendrik Donker in 1693. Gerard van Keulen took over for his father in 1714, and interestingly our map of 1709 already includes his imprint:

An exceptional piece.
