Description

Map of what is now Panama with a bit of Costa Rica and Columbia. Numerous places are plotted, including Santiago (S. Yago) and Portobelo. The map extends to include the Gulf of Darien.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin

Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 21 March 1772) was a French hydrographer, geographer, and intellectual.

Born in Paris, Bellin was head of France’s hydrographic office, as well as a member of both the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50-year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine. His maps of Canada and of French territories in North America (New France, Acadia, Louisiana) are particularly valuable. He died at Versailles.

Condition Description

Slight toning to paper and some paper chips along the lower edge; very good.
