Splendid 1930s pictorial map of the University of California system

Details

Handsome cartograph depicting an aerial view of the state California in green with illustrations denoting the various campuses of the University of California system, including Berkeley, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Riverside, La Jolla, Mount Hamilton, and Davis.

Areas of study are listed within the border around the map: astronomy, nursing, pharmacy, librarianship, chemistry, commerce, mining, architecture, agriculture, dentistry, medicine, education, law, engineering, arts, and letters. Other interesting information includes a list of extension division offices, branch seismic stations (including one at Stanford University), and museums. A note mentions that farm advisors are maintained in 42 counties, with examples depicted pictorially.

Other examples of charming pictorial representations include important buildings on the campuses (e.g. the iconic Berkeley Campanile and UCLA’s Royce Hall), cattle farms, summer camps, civil engineers at work, an “exchange professor” riding a bicycle, Arabian horses, and a Jules Verne-style diver on a pier opposite the Scripps Institute for Oceanography.
