Description

Detailed street map of San Francisco (including a ground plan of the Panama Pacific International Exposition), with a smaller relief map of the Bay Area below it on the same side of the sheet, flanked by columns of text on San Francisco and the Twin Peaks Tunnel.

Among the great tourist attractions offered by San Francisco, one does not normally include the Twin Peaks Tunnel, running from the Castro to West Portal, on the list. Thus it is somewhat humorous to see an entire text box promoting the tunnel, calling it “one of the sights of great interest…the largest Municipal Tunnel in the world for rapid transit purposes.”

The second map has a lot of interesting detail, including town grids, steamship routes, and several railroads: the Ocean Shore Railroad, the Southern Pacific Railroad, the Northwestern Pacific Railroad, the Western Pacific Railroad, the Santa Fe Railroad, and more. The verso has descriptions of neighborhoods in which the San Francisco-based company Baldwin and Howell Real Estate holds developments and properties, in San Francisco and as far away as Stockton..

OCLC/WorldCat lists eight examples in institutional libraries, but only two in California, those being at the California Historical Society and the Sutro Library.
