Lovely 1757 Depot de la Marine map of southern Scotland and Northern Ireland, including Edinburgh and Glasgow

Attractive 1757 map of southern Scotland with part of Northern Ireland. It features exceptional detail of coasts and cities, including Edinburgh and Glasgow. Loch Ness is depicted as well, but no monster.

The map is adorned with a lovely cartouche and the Depot de la Marine seal, and is laid on a handsome rose linen that compliments that hand color of the map nicely.

Jacques Nicolas Bellin

Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 21 March 1772) was a French hydrographer, geographer, and intellectual.

Born in Paris, Bellin was head of France’s hydrographic office, as well as a member of both the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50-year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine. His maps of Canada and of French territories in North America (New France, Acadia, Louisiana) are particularly valuable. He died at Versailles.
