Description

Because of its excellent detail and attractive design, this map of the state of California is far more desired than its contemporaries. Indeed it stands out as the best atlas map of the state in this period.

The map was originally published in Atlas of the United States, by Rogers and Johnston, a work now quite rare on the market. Its maps are known for their tremendous detail, if not always accurate — Mt. Shasta on our map is given an elevation of 17,600 feet!

An early line from Benicia to Yuba City is shown, as is a Mormon settlement near Bigelow Lake.

Cartographer(s):

Alexander Keith Johnston

Alexander Johnson was a Scottish publisher.

Henry Darwin Rogers

Henry Rogers was a mapmaker from New York.
