An in-depth study for the regional peoples and cultures of Congo as it was.

Details

This unique pictorial map of the Congo is the brilliant work of Belgian artist James Thiriar. Thiriar had been on several expeditions through western and central Africa documenting art and culture as he went.

During the 1950s, the Congo experienced an unprecedented level of urbanization and modernization, often at the expense of historically indigenous customs and art.

The map is an especially important document of regional dress throughout the Congo.
