Three curious maps of North America made in South Vietnam.

Details

This is a fascinating set of maps of North America published by Saigon Moi, a widely-read daily newspaper in South Vietnam. The titles are:

[1] Bản đồ hiệp-chủng-quốc kỳ-quan – Map of the Wonders of the U.S.A.

[2] Bản đồ mễ-tây cơ thắng cảnh – Map of Scenic Spots of Mexico

[3] Bán đồ gia-nã-đại kỳ-quan – Map of the Wonders of Canada

Each map provides the basic geography of the country in question and a series of photographs showing famous sites or highlighting their industries. Several U.S. cities and states are misspelled, or rather spelled in the French style, perhaps because the makers had consulted French maps in producing this set.

The origin or purpose of these maps is unclear, but they may have been part of an atlas published by Saigon Moi (OCLC 63635113), which mostly consists of maps of Vietnam along with a handful of maps of foreign countries. The atlas is not dated but it most likely was made in the mid-1960s.

Saigon Moi

These maps were created and published by Saigon Moi (Saigon News), one of two major daily newspapers published in South Vietnam (the other being Than Chung). Saigon Moi operated out of Saigon and reached its peak in the late 1950s – 1960s.
