Large-format pictorial map of California documenting the state’s historical sites.

Decorative and detailed map of California with its important historical sites, along with inset maps of the cities of San Francisco, Monterey, Los Angeles, and San Diego, and an inset of Mother Lode sites.

The sites, which are listed in detail of the back of the map, are divided into four time periods: 1) Spanish-American; 2) Years of the Gold Rush; 3) Agricultural Era; and 4) Commercial and Industrial Expansion. The mapmaker makes great use of the space provided by the large-format of the map, incorporating four dramatic illustrations by Bay Area native Gordon Brusstar to represent each era: a mission and its priest, a gold seeker with his pick, a farmer toiling in a field, and a shirtless factory worker. All give a sense of nobility and pride in the state.
