The Dār al-Funūn (lit. “House of Arts and Sciences”) was founded in Tehran in 1851 by the reforming grand vizier Amīr Kabīr as Iran’s first modern polytechnic. Initially staffed with European — primarily Austrian — instructors in military science, medicine, and engineering, it developed over the following decades into a self-sustaining institution where Persian graduates taught the next generation. By the 1880s and 1890s, the Dār al-Funūn was producing engineers, cartographers, and scientists entirely from within its own ranks — men like ʿAbd al-Razzāq Khān, whose map stands as evidence of what the institution had achieved.
