Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826) was an American Founding Father, principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and the third President of the United States (1801–1809). A statesman, diplomat, and philosopher, Jefferson was a strong advocate for democracy, individual rights, and the separation of church and state. He also served as the second Vice President under John Adams and was the first Secretary of State under George Washington. Jefferson founded the University of Virginia and played a key role in expanding U.S. territory through the Louisiana Purchase. Despite championing liberty, he was a slaveholder, a contradiction that continues to shape his legacy.
