G.K. Fitch & Co. was the publishing imprint of George Kenyon Fitch (1826–1906), one of the most prominent figures in early California journalism and publishing. Born in New York, Fitch arrived in California in 1849 and established himself first in Sacramento, where he helped found the Sacramento Times and Transcript. By 1852 he had moved to San Francisco — precisely the moment when G.K. Fitch & Co. published the present Manual — and went on to become one of the city’s most influential press figures, eventually acquiring the San Francisco Bulletin and the San Francisco Call in partnership with Loring Pickering and James W. Simonton, both of which became powerful voices in the city.
