Description

The Beat Generation’s Backyard, Seen from Above

This is an unrecorded c. 1962 aerial photograph of Mill Valley, Marin County, California. It is oriented roughly with west at the top, with the baseball fields of Boyle Park at center-right here serving as a useful basis for comparison with a satellite image of the town today. Another recognizable feature is the large circular tank at the bottom-right here, nowadays surrounded by homes. To the south (left) of the baseball fields are the major roads of East Blithedale Ave. and Miller Ave.

In the post-World War II period, Mill Valley transformed from a sleepy, seasonal retreat into a vibrant, year-round suburban enclave for young families and creative professionals. A housing boom drove the rapid development of neighborhoods like Strawberry and the hillsides surrounding the town center, facilitated by improved access to Highway 101, which streamlined commutes to San Francisco. Despite this physical growth, the town maintained its rugged, rustic charm, serving as a sanctuary for the burgeoning Beat Generation; luminaries like Jack Kerouac and Gary Snyder famously immortalized the slopes of Mount Tamalpais in literature, cementing the area’s reputation as a cradle of countercultural thought.

This photograph was likely part of a promotional effort by the town (perhaps led by the Chamber of Commerce), as we have seen other documents from the era with the slogan – Beautiful Mill Valley, My Home Town.” At the same time, this aerial photographic sheet is rare, and we have been unable to locate any other examples of it in institutional collections or on the market.
