Seth Eastman

Captain Seth Eastman (January 24, 1808– August 31, 1875) was a West Point graduate and artist who served as a mapmaker and illustrator in the U.S. Army. He was trained as a topographical artist and became especially known for the hundreds of illustrations he made for Henry Rowe Schoolcraft’s six-volume study of the Indian Tribes of the United States.

Eastman served two tours at Fort Snelling in the Minnesota Territory and, during his second tour, was appointed the fort’s commanding officer. During these years, Eastman drew and painted most of his studies of Native American life.
