Description

A fascinating and ephemeral real estate marketing map for development at Chicago Highlands.

Chicago Highlands was an industrial community that developed in the late 19th century around the American Malleable Ironworks factory, situated near Barrington alongside the Chicago and Northwestern Railway. This factory was significant for the area’s early industry and employed several hundred men at its peak, many of whom were Hungarian immigrants.

Despite its early promise, competition and reports of faulty work led to the factory’s bankruptcy by 1903. The area once known as Chicago Highlands is now marked by a shopping center called The Foundry of Barrington, which commemorates the industrial history of the location.
